i was born maisy james atwell to – yes, the atwell’s from the upper west side. my mom, deborah was on broadway, and my dad, david used to be an agent – that’s how he and my mom met – but now he works on the board of directors at the met opera house. i grew up on central park west and i don’t really know what else you need me to say. i had a normal childhood, or what would be normal for anyone i know. it was always just me, mom, and dad (and the housekeeper), so i guess you could say we were close. both of my parents had jobs that let them watch me grow up, which i’m thankful for because they really did help mold me into the person i am, or want to be.
would you say you're a part of a clique?
here at mcoa, no, not really, but in highschool, yes. you know the show gossip girl? well, that show is kinda true to real life. no, i didn’t sleep with someone in the back of a limo, but the school social order translated to trinty school almost perfectly. and somehow i found had the time to be at the top of it all. thinking back to it all now even makes me exhausted. now, i can hardly find a spare few hours to sleep.
it sounds like you’re quite busy now, why?
i don’t want to waste this opportunity i have at mcoa. i’m lucky to of even gotten in since it’s so competitive (no, neither of my parents helped), so i just want to make the best of it that i can. and my parents are funding it all out of their pocket, so again, without their ever-going support, i couldn’t be where i am today and i don’t want to let them down. i don’t want to let myself down on my dreams.
what are your dreams?
to be that girl on broadway that everyone else wants to be. i want to see my name on the marquee just as my mom’s name was years ago. i want to sing in front of a sold out crowd and then go out the stagedoor and receive flowers from my fans. i want what basically everyone in new york wants, and i will get it.
what's one habit you have that others hate?
are you asking that because of the answer i just gave? you totally are. i guess i can get a bit… aggressive when it comes to my future. it’s just… i want to be a star, and if that means i’ve got to be over-achieving and a perfectionist to get it, then you better be damn sure that that’s how i’ll be to get it. and you know, i’m sorry if how i am bothers you, but i don’t really care. i try to be kind, but the new yorker in me doesn’t know what “kind” means sometimes.
