somehow madelyn was certain she was going to need a lot of coffee to get through this day. there was no way that it could possibly be anything but awkward to be back in classes for the first time since the break up, and she knew there was really no way to avoid seeing the people she didn't want to see. it was possible that the summer break had been long enough to avoid any awkward interactions, but mady decided to load up on coffee before classes just as a precaution. after the barista handed her the coffee she had ordered, mady turned around, her attention focused entirely on digging in her bag for her cell phone, causing her to bump into the person standing behind her. "sorry, sorry," she apologized quickly, just managing to avoid spilling her coffee all over herself and the person in front of her. mady finally looked up, and bit back a loud sigh when she saw who she had bumped in to. "oh. um, hi. sorry?" she apologized again, all while thinking that she was really going to need a lot more coffee to get through this day.

given everything had had happened over summer break, spencer never thought that going back to classes would be hard, if anything he had been looking forward to getting back and even getting to see madelyn, but that was before he had heard the rumours that had been going around. now the outlook was different. although he never completely didn't look forward to classes, spencer was less excited to have to go sit in the same room as his exgirlfriend and his best friend (and rumoured lover) for the next few hours as onlookers documented and tweeted their reactions to one another. that was why he had left the apartment early, on route for coffee before arriving on campus. as he stood in line on his phone, spencer received a text containing alec's drink order as he was late leaving the house. putting in their orders and writing a text in reply, spencer felt a body run into him from the front as he moved to the counter to pick up the drinks. looking up, he saw her managing to bother just about everyone around them. "oh," he said, a bit taken aback with madelyn standing there in front of him for the first time in months. "it's okay, don't worry about it," spencer spoke quickly to her, feeling the awkwardness begin to creep in.

mady couldn’t help but think that the universe had something against her. it was funny just how much everything could change between two people in only a few months. there was a time, not that long ago, in fact, that she would have loved to accidentally run into spencer when she was getting her coffee, although maybe not quite so literally. it would have been a wonderful start to her day. now, however, it was the last thing she needed. ”yeah, okay,” she answered, not quite sure what to say to him. there was a brief, awkward silence as she stood there, trying to think of something to say to him after all this time. a quick glance around the shop told madelyn that it was in fact full of their peers, which only made her want to burst out into laughter. of course the first time they ran into each other would be in front of so many people who had heard some version or another of what had happened between them. she knew that it was only a matter of time before some version of this particular encounter made it’s way around the school as well. this time mady was unable to hold back a loud sigh, as she finally hit the point where she couldn’t take the silence anymore. ”so, uh, how have you been?” mady asked spencer, internally wincing at the extreme awkwardness of the question.

it was a mixture of disbelief and hatred for this coffee shop that ran though spencer at the moment. although he wanted to believe the odds of running into madelyn in the coffee shop were low, they actually were quite high as it was the closest one to campus. and, since it was the closest one on campus, it was filled with mcoa students grabbing caffeine before heading off to class. spencer wanted to slam his head down in defeat on the counter. he had known that seeing mady was going to be hard, especially since they shared many classes together, but now with the rumour flying around everything became even harder, especially since he wanted to try to get her back. apparently the feeling of defeat only wasn't hitting him, but judging by the sigh that had just escaped her, spencer figured mady was sharing some of the same feelings. "i've been, good?" spencer replied, sounding unsure. in all honesty, he wasn't too sure on how he should reply, and with that aside, he was still fighting for words because of the awkwardness of the situation, which of course had to get worse (because it would just be too simple to not be). the barista had called his name, offering up the two coffees he had ordered for himself and alec. it was almost as if he could hear the tweets being sent off. "what about you?" he said, returning her question as he turned back to face her, hoping that not many would focus on the two coffees he held in his hands.

despite the awkwardness of the question, and of the whole situation in itself, madelyn did actually care about spencer’s answer. truth be told, she still cared about spencer a lot -- not that she would ever admit that out loud to herself, let alone to him. as far as she was concerned, there was no point in making everything between them any more awkward than it already was, and that’s all admitting something like that would do. but she did still care about him, and so his answer brought a small, almost unnoticeable smile to her face, despite the unsure tone to his voice. ”good. i’m glad,” she answered genuinely, without any awkwardness for the first time since she ran into him. of course, that couldn’t last long. when spencer turned back around to face mady, the first thing she noticed was that he was holding two coffees, and knew immediately that one was for alec. madelyn avoiding commenting on it, but she knew that the way her eyebrow shot up at the sight would say more than enough. so much for moving past any awkwardness. even so, she answered his question. ”i’ve been alright,” mady said with a shrug, and a sip of her coffee.

spencer could feel the slight mood change when madelyn said she was glad he was doing good, and then he could feel it shift back the moment he picked up the coffees. he looked away from madelyn and her arched eyebrow as she answered his question, nodding as she did so. although she didn't say she felt totally horrible, spencer felt like crap. how hard would it of been for him to pick up the phone over the summer and send her a simple text? apparently not, because he even managed to mess that up. spencer brought his focus back to mady, catching the end of her shrug, causing a sheepish smile to to grow on his face. "good," he said, even though her being 'just alright' wasn't very good in his eyes, it was the only thing that came to mind to keep conversation going.

there were very few things in life that mady hated more than awkward silences. she had always enjoyed being the girl who always knew what to say, and so anything other than that tended to throw her off her game. this was hard. mady had no idea when it had become so hard to talk to spencer. well, no that wasn’t true. she knew exactly when it started, as much as she wished she could forget. it was even worse now than it had been immediately after, mostly because of the rumors circulating around school. after another quick glance at the coffees that she just knew were going to feed the rumors even more, mady forced a quick smile onto her face. ”ready for classes to start again?” she asked him, knowing that the question was even more lame than the first one, but wanting to do whatever she could to keep the conversation going. talking to spencer was hard, but not talking to him was even harder.

spencer was glad with the question that madelyn asked. he could talk about school, it was a safe topic for the two of them to talk about. "yeah," spencer said, feeling confident for the first time since talking with madelyn. classes were easy. although it meant having to sit in a room with mady and alec (and not to mention all the others who were basically waiting for something to happen for them to talk about), having school back in his life would be a welcome constant to focus on. "i assume you are too?" spencer wasn't sure if mady felt the same way as he did about school, but he was at least the tiniest bit certain that she was mainly because people didn't come to mcoa if they weren't.

it was actually kind of funny, mady thought. any other time, in any other circumstance, if she had been asked if she was looking forward to classes starting, there would be no hesitation on her part. madelyn loved everything about mcoa, and actually enjoyed going to classes. if the current conversation was anything to go by, however, sitting in class with spencer was going to be so many different levels of awkward. it was going to be especially bad once alec was added to the mix. even so, there was really no way mady could say something like that to spencer, and so she pasted a hopefully realistic looking grin on her face. ”yeah, definitely,” she answered, sounding as sincere as she could. truth be told, she wasn’t exactly lying. she was looking forward to classes. what she wasn’t looking forward to was the inevitable awkward atmosphere that would accompany it. ”it will definitely be good to get back to the daily grind,” mady continued with a quiet laugh.

spencer nodded as he couldn't of agreed more with mady. getting back to daily routine would feel great, and hopefully make things less awkward (and spencer hoped that it would be less weird when he and mady were around each other). it wasn't too long before spencer could feel another awkward silence start to creep up between the two of them. feeling bodies walk past him, spencer's eyes flicked up to the clock that was hung on the wall behind the counter they still occupied. "i guess we should get going to class," he said, his eyes darting back to madelyn. for a brief moment, spencer felt a wave of nostalgia to the days when he and mady would meet up for coffee before class and basically have to run to make it on time. shaking the old images from his mind, he spoke up once again before turning to leave, "i guess i'll see you in class then." he smiled faintly before turning and leaving the coffee shop, on route to the first class of the long day ahead.
