so tell us about yourself
i was born on the upper east side of manhattan on october 11th, 1977. my father, james, is heir to our family's fortunate. my mother, evelyn, is a high class fashion designer. i have a younger brother named nathan who is fifteen years younger than me. he's twenty now and attends the conservatory, so it's a little weird being his teacher. i was on broadway from ages sixteen to twenty-eight in six productions, on and off. i also worked on a few movies and tv shows that filmed in the area. i also went to nyu and graduated with my b.f.a. in 2001. now i'm a teacher at the conservatory.
how long have you been teaching?
i've been teaching at the conservatory for three years. prior to this, after i left broadway, i was taking some downtime for my personal life. i knew i didn't want to go back to the stage just yet, so i thought teaching would be the next thing i could do.
why teach? why not go back to the stage?
i thought about going back to the stage. as much as i love it, i don't want to do a random show or just say yes to the first one that comes along. it has to be the right fit for me. so far it hasn't come along yet. when it comes along, i'll gladly go back to my first love. until then, i'm happy teaching. so i guess the answer to the first question is that i love being able to guide and inspire the next generation. i was once in their shoes being taught by some of the best mentors the world had to offer and always hoped that i could be that one day. i'm not sure that exactly what i feel like yet, but if this is as good as i'm gonna get, then i'll take it.
what about your personal life? you took time off for it?
i did. i decided that i wanted to lay low for awhile. i figured after twelve years that i'd earned a few years off. and in the process i met the woman of my dreams. her name is madeline and we've been together for six years now. i think it's time to take it to the next step too. and i know my parents will be thrilled about that because they've been bugging me for years to get married.
you said your brother was a student. do you think he has what it takes to live up to your reputation?
absolutely. nate is a talented guy, maybe even more talented than myself. i've never been jealous of him, so don't read into that. after all, i'm the one who made it as a teenager and he's still trying to catch a break. but if it doesn't happen for him soon, i'll personally make sure he gets on that stage.
