yeah, so my name is meredith, but call me mer. or merry. either of those is alright to me. i don't care. i come from harlem. yeah yeah, i don't want your comments. they called blondie a lot. i ain't blonde. well, i wasn't. i don't fit the normal harlem status quo. my mom's latina and my dad is black. my folks split when i was two, and then my mom od'd when i was fourteen. i was sent to live with my dad in harlem. kids at my school didn't accept me at first, but since i grew up on the wrong side of the tracks in detriot, didn't take long from them to get used to me. plus i socked a ho in the face for looking at me wrong.
why mcoa?
it's a funny story. i'm kind of a child prodigy. i never took a dance class 'til i was fifteen. it always came natural. some of the guys took me under their wings when they saw me dancin' on the sidewalk outside my dad's place. next thing i knew, i was a b girl. mcoa offered me a full ride, since pops can't afford it.
what do you like to do in your spare time?
shiiiit. it's always been dancing for me. no matter how good or bad i was. i just like to let loose, have fun. that's why i'm still doin' it. other than that... i dunno. i like shopping when i got the cash. laughing with friends. the usual.
do you feel judged when you're at school.
ehh. sometimes. mostly it's good. sometimes i get dirty looks from some of those rich upper east and west side girls. i don't give them no never mind. i'm a little rough around the edges. no one knows that better than me.
tell us about your mom.
mama was a good woman, in spite of all her vices. she mighta been high a lot, but she still made enough money to take care of me. she was the one who originally taught me how to dance. it may seem a little corny, but dancing makes me feel close to her. she od'd on cocaine. but i still love and miss her.
