this was the thing about nate: he was a fantastic actor. he was a fantastic singer. he was a horrific dancer. with an awkward laugh, he said, "oh. no no no, you don't want to see me dance. my brother's girlfriend has been trying to teach me and she's one of the best, so trying is the operative word." madeline was great and everything but he just could not dance to save his life. that sucked too, because if he wanted to be on broadway, he knew choreography was a big part of that.

merry raised an eyebrow. there was no way he was that bad. and if he was... merry just had to see it for herself. "come on, i wanna partner for this song. it's easy, just copy me." she smiled, as genuinely as she could. easy for her, maybe. she needed a good laugh.

dancing wasn't something that nate was uncomfortable with. he just couldn't do it. he wasn't coordinated. "you wanna get me on my feet? you're gonna have to work for it." nate wasn't easily convinced to do things he either wasn't comfortable doing, or couldn't do good or even decent. dancing was not something he could even do decently.

merry smirked. "that sounds like a challenge..." she moved around and grabbed his arm, attempting to pull him to his feet. "what's that entail?" she asked. merry never backed down, and she loved a challenge. if nate was really willing to give her a run for her money, she'd definitely fight for it. it was probably harmless, anyway.

it was actually really exciting to nate, much to his surprise, that merry was taking on his challenge. most girls wouldn't dare because they were normally too shy. but merry didn't seem like most girls... and that was actually kind of sexy to him. when she grabbed at his arm, he remained sitting, letting her keep a hold of him. "whatever you want it to, sweetheart," he said, looking her directly in the eyes. this would be fun for him. if she wanted to pull him to his feet that badly, she'd had to do better than that.

she dropped his hand and took a cautious step backward. nate certainly didn't strike her as that kind of guy, but if that's how he was, merry wanted nothing to do with him. "i think you should go." she said, crossing her arms over her chest. she didn't need to freely give him something to ogle at.

laughing, nate said, "come on, sweetheart, i'm just messing with you." he jumped to his feet. "but if that's how you feel, then i'll definitely respect your wishes." he grabbed his bag and put the strap over his shoulder, still holding onto it. nate was definitely the kind of guy to hook up with random people--he'd done it a few times now--but he'd never force someone into it. they had to be willing. not like he saw merry hooking up with him, but it was always fun to mess with women like that, especially ones that were clearly able to hold their own. he liked the challenge of it.

as nate grabbed his bag and stood to leave, merry realized she'd offended him. but in the same breath, he'd offended her too. he seemed like a well enough guy, but first impressions meant a lot, and what he'd said freaked her out a little. but to be fair, she pushed the prejudice aside, at least for the time being. "okay, okay," she caved. "you can stay... but you gotta quit calling me 'sweetheart'." she dropped her arms by her sides, resting one hand on her hip and letting the other dangle loosely. "deal?"

dropping his bag back on the ground, nate crossed his arms. "whatever you say, darlin'." he smirked, wondering how much he was getting on her nerves. nate was thoroughly enjoying this though. "but i'm serious, i'm a horrible dancer. you don't wanna go there with me." if madeline couldn't even get him to be a good dancer, there was absolutely no hope for him.
