well hi, i'm shayla. call me shay, please and thank you. if you don't then i'll just ignore you. i was born on january 9th, 1993 in ontario, canada, but the family upped and moved to v-town when i was 2, so i don't have many memories of ontario. my dad, michael, is a high school teacher. my mom, rhonda, owns a diner and is the head chef. i didn't come from much since my parents don't make that much money. anyways, i have an older sister who is a junior at mcoa. her name is sadie.
is that how you ended up at mcoa? through your sister?
kind of. i originally wanted to go to hollywood, but my parents insisted that i go to college or some kind of performing arts school. and all of the ones i looked at in california just didn't feel right to me. so sadie suggested mcoa and, as much as i hated following my sister, i knew this was the school that would work for me.
how'd you get into dance?
i was kind of forced into it. my mom put me in it when i was, like, 3 years old and at first i hated it. but when i was about 10 or 12 years old, before my teens, i fell in love with it. so i decided to stay in it and it became a part of my life. now i just hope to be able to perform with a dance troupe somewhere, whether it be as an extra in a movie or on broadway or something.
you're a drama minor, so how serious is acting to you?
not as serious as dance. but in the business nowadays you have to be multi-talented. i may never be the actress and singer sadie is, but she'll certainly never be the dance i am either. we respect each other in that way. i like acting, but i don't love it. i'd much rather just dance without having to memorize lines and put myself in the shoes of a character and make them grow. now, i'm obviously not ruling out acting or else it wouldn't be my minor, so if that's your next question, i answered it for you.
what's your favorite thing about mcoa?
i guess it's being around my friends. i actually had a couple friends enroll from b.c. and we all came here together. plus having sadie around is comforting. though she and i aren't particularly close, it's nice to have a family connection out here. don't get me wrong, i love my sister, but sometimes she gets on my nerves because of how talented she is and how much she knows it too. but having her and my friends here is my favorite part. i miss b.c. but i'm also loving new york.
